Under the Artistic Direction of Amanda Rodgers, VDC is in its 16th year of operation and offers instruction in dance and stage presentation in a structured yet cooperative environment. At VDC we focus on FUN, ACHIEVEMENT, and SUCCESS, using age appropriate music and movement.
FUNDANCE, AGES 2-5: An introduction to rhythm, this program encourages creativity, interaction, and the development of listening skills and discipline in a fun filled environment, using Jazz, Ballet, Tap, and musical theatre techniques. Jazz, Ballet and Tap classes are also offered to 5 year olds.
JAZZ, 5 + up: Dancers are placed according to age and ability. Classes incorporate warm-up, flexibility and toning, Ballet & Jazz technique, isolations, turns, leaps, step combinations, and choreography for year-end presentation.
BALLET, 5 + up: This program follows the RAD syllabus. Students will work on body alignment, presentation, strength and balance. Mandatory for those entering Music Festivals. VDC offers the opportunity for technical exams.
BALLET TECHNIQUE, 5 + up: This is a 2nd or 3rd ballet class for more serious students who wish to increase their technical level and is required for exams. This class also offers the opportunity for dancers to build technical strength for pointe work.
MODERN 11+: Dancers must also take a Ballet class. This performance class emphasizes the use of breath, release techniques, & movement initiated from the body's centre, balanced with exercises to build strength & endurance.
LYRICAL: this class uses ballet and Jazz technique to create less traditional choreography. Dancers must also be enrolled in Jazz.
TAP: This program follows the CDTA syllabus: students will work on technique, rhythm and combinations leading to a year-end performance. VDC offers the opportunity for technical exams.
HIPHOP/STREET: Incorporates the latest in street dances: House, Popping/Locking, Crumping etc. It is recommended that students also take some formal training to help with musicality, rhythm, coordination and strength.
IRISH: A very high-energy style, this class is based on traditional set dances as well as original choreography. Dancers use Soft-shoes to begin and can learn Hard-shoe dances as they become more advanced. Hard-shoe dancers must also be enrolled in a Soft-shoe class.
FLEXIBILITY & CORE STRENGTH: In recognition of the fact that stretching helps prevent injury, that dancers need to be very flexible and strong, and that during the growing years the muscles have a hard enough time keeping up with lengthening bones-- this class is being offered for dancers who wish to work on flexibility and strength.
STAGE, SONG AND DANCE: Classes will emphasize proper Vocal and Dance technique, as well as acting skills. These skills will help the students build a repertoire of songs to present at the year-end performance.
AMANDA RODGERS, B.Ed (Dance): Owner/Director. Amanda has taught in the Valley for the past 24 years. She trained in England and received a B.Ed. in Physical Education & Dance. Since moving to Canada, she has successfully completed National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 3, Elementary Ballet (Cecchetti) and Applied Physiology & Anatomy. Amanda regularly attends workshops and summer schools to keep abreast of new teaching methods and ideas. As well as teaching our most advanced students, Amanda also enjoys the special challenge of teaching our youngest dancers and has great success with them.
NATASHA KOZAK, CDTA Tap: Natasha has lived most of her life in the Comox Valley. Starting Gymnastics at age 6, Natasha switched over to Tap and Irish dancing with Pat Pantuso at age 11. She trained in the RAD syllabus at Courtenay School of Dance with Marg McQuade, also training with Amalia Schelhorne and Jennifer Verfaille. Natasha is a Member of the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA) Tap, SOCAN, and also has previously achieved an Associate level in the AIDT (Tap). She has continued training in Irish Dance with Deb Pinchbeck. Natasha is also the Office Manager and Music Director at VDC.
MICHELLE HENLY, B.A, B.Ed: Michelle has completed her RAD teaching courses and will be fully certified November 2011. She has trained in musical theatre, acting, vocals, jazz and tap at the Randolf School of Performing Arts and trained as a classical ballet dancer at the National School of Ballet. Michelle has performed with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Akimbo, many television and stage productions
KORTNEY HUNCHUK: Kortney has made artistry and dance her life; having trained many years in ballet, jazz and modern dance. She has completed the National Coaching Certification Program (BCCP) Level 1 and 2 Artistic. Kortney offers to experienced dancers, a style called Fusion, a dance style incorporating many styles of artistry.
CHELSEA BRENNAN: A graduate of VDC, Chelsea is teaching Hiphop to our junior and intermediate dancers. She continuously attends workshops and stays current with trends. Chelsea is also currently studying at NIC for a Fine Arts Diploma.
GUEST TEACHERS
TERRY GRANTNER, LRAD: Terry is an Examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance and will oversee the Exam program at VDC.
DANETTE BELL, PDTA: Danette has been a successful teacher/choreographer and adjudicator for over 30 years. She is a Member of the Professional Dance Teachers Association, and was the Owner/Artistic Director of Danettes Dance Inc.
STEVEN SALINAS: Steven brings fresh youth-filled hip-hop choreography while teaching his students to appreciate the culture of the moves. "Movement is just movement, once movement is driven by music it is movement with purpose, if movement with purpose is driven by a soul, then what once was movement is now dance."-Steven Salinas

To dance is to use the whole body. Sending your dancer to class in appropriate clothes, shoes, and hair style, not only helps your dancer feel more prepared for class, but also allows the teacher to clearly see your dancer’s body alignment: spine, hips, waistline, legs, arms, etc. This helps proper technique to be taught to your child.
We ask that students take care and pride in the way they prepare themselves to attend dance class. As well as being respectful to the teachers, it will help your dancer to be confident in themselves and their work.
Dancers not appropriately dressed, may be asked to sit and watch class.

Students who have shown a strong developing technique, energetic performance, a positive attitude and good attendance are invited to participate in the Performing Arts Program. This entitles a dancer to take part in music festivals, competitions, master classes and conventions. The program also requires students to take additional disciplines, determined by staff. This program takes a great deal of commitment from dancers and parents, especially in time, transportation, entry fees, and costumes. Without this commitment it is suggested that your dancer remain in the General Program. DRESS CODE: ALL P.A. students will require a plain coloured bodysuit for all disciplines, with either tights &/or bike shorts. Hiphop; white runners, sweats are ok. NO jeans and hair up. Correct footwear for various disciplines. Buns/bodysuits/tights for ballet(no shorts).
Performing Arts students interested in small group or solo choreography will be required to enrol in 2 ballet classes per week for technical training.
